In oppressive systems, human rights defenders and journalists are usually the first to be attacked. Read about Israel's pattern of killing jorunlaists for more than 20 years--a report I helped produce as part of CPJ.

Over more than 11 years at the Committee to Protect Journalists, I documented close to 400 journalists killed in the Middle East region, hundreds more imprisoned, and thousands more forced into exile.

I covered the Arab Spring uprisings and civil wars, including in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. I also worked on major political conflicts in the region, including in Iran, Egypt, and Tunisia, as well as the most recent wars in Gaza, Lebanon, and Sudan. I devised strategies to protect journalists and managed advocacy efforts with U.S., EU, and UN institutions and partner organizations in the region.

On the first anniversary of the Israeli army murder of Palestinian American journalist Sherine Abu Akleh, I went to Israeli and to the Capital building to demand accountability for her murder and to stop the impunity of Israeli army fire against Palestinian journalists.

Demanding accountability for Sherine Abu Akleh’s murder

In a speech with The Centre for Investigative Journalism in London in November 2024, I called out the structural racism in international media for failing to call out Israeli government impunity.
